CEBU CITY – University of San Carlos on Tuesday formally placed under protest its Cesafi game against Southwestern University, arguing that Cobras import Bendly Valdor is ineligible to play.
Valdor, formerly of Deerfield Beach High School in Florida and brought in by SWU just last week, went scoreless but the Cobras still came up with a 69-67 win over the Warriors on Sunday.
The Warriors say Valdor, who entered the game late in the first period, is ineligible because he was included in the team long after the deadline for the submission of requirements for athletes had passed.
SWU athletic director Ryan Aznar had been granted permission late last week by the Cesafi commissioner’s office to include Valdor in the lineup to replace longtime Cobras import Justin Aboude, who is out for the season after being diagnosed with coronary artery disease.
Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy said the matter will be discussed in an emergency board meeting.
Spin.ph acquired a copy of the commissioner’s decision dated August 1.
It said, “Since the opening games of the CESAFI has not started, the Commissioner, for humanitarian reason on Justin Aboude’s medical condition and in the spirit of sportsmanship, allows Bendly Valdor to replace Aboude to play in the 14th CESAFI basketball season.”
The letter also indicated that Valdor’s records had been submitted, properly screened and passed the qualifications as a student-athlete of SWU.
Valdor traces his roots to Haiti but played at Deerfield. During his senior season with the Bucks, he averaged 7.9 points, 9.1 rebounds and 1.7 steals in 21 games.
