CEBU CITY - University of San Carlos has Mike Cantonao to thank as the Warriors nipped the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers, 83-73, in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament on Monday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Cantonao made the win possible as he canned consecutive three-pointers that kept the rallying Panthers at bay.
Before the veteran USC sniper’s heroics, the Panthers were knocking on the door, 73-75, with a little over two minutes to go in the tightly fought contest.
The victory evened the Warriors’ record to 2-2 while the Panthers remained the only team without a win on a 0-4 card.
Cantonao finished with 16 points for USC, which was led by the 19 of Chinese guard Stephen Que. Nico Magat and Nilton Otida added 14 and 12, respectively.
USPF got 25 points from Joseph Sedurifa, whose two free throws that cut the Warriors’ lead down to two proved to be the final points for the Panthers.
