CEBU CITY—University of the Visayas defeated University of San Jose-Recoletos 89-76 to grab the solo lead in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Green Lancers top of the standings at 4-0 (win-loss), half a game ahead of their victims.
UV built double-digit advantages and was up, 81-69, with just 2:43 left in the game before the Jaguars rallied to close in at 76-81 on fastbreak lay-ups by Jayson Olbedado and Medjet dela Rama and a free throw by Miguel Tabaloc.
USJ-R had several chances to come even closer but missed three-point tries by Wilkins Sanchez, Tabaloc and Olbedado stalled their momentum. However, the most telling statistic for the Jaguars was their awful performance from the free-throw line where they went 15-of-36.
Cameroonian Steve Cedric Akomo teamed up with prized rookie Wowie Escosio to punish the interior defense of USJ-R all game long. Akomo had 20 points, including three ferocious slam dunks, while Escosio had 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists.
USJ-R was led by the 18 of Tabaloc and the 13 of Abulaiz Sulaiman.
