COLEGIO de San Lorenzo tries to claim the second and last twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four when it takes on Technological Institute of the Philippines on Saturday in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) Season 2 at the Olivarez College gym in Sucat, Parañaque City.
Though already assured of a semis berth, the Griffins hope to go all-out in their 2 p.m. clash with the Engineers as they intend to secure the second and last bonus that the league dangles to the top two finishers after the double-round elims.
Reigning champion Centro Escolar University claimed the first bonus last Thursday following a 75-63 thumping of Diliman College that boosted their record to 10-1.
The Griffins are running second with a 9-1 card while the Engineers need to get back at their first round tormentor to keep the flickering semis hopes alive.
With a 3-7 card, TIP must win its remaining four games to arrange a playoff with the Diliman Blue Dragons for the last semis berth.
The Blue Dragons slipped to a 7-5 record after absorbing their fourth straight loss.
Clashing in the other game at 12 noon are Bulacan State University and University of Batangas.
CdSL coach Boni Garcia is confident they can secure the remaining bonus even if big man Jon Gabriel will miss Saturday’s game.
The 6-foot-5 Gabriel is already preparing himself for the PBA Rookie Draft proceedings on Sunday.
“The guys have shown that they are capable of winning even without Jon so I’m expecting them to have that same mentality against TIP. We cannot let up since we’re aiming to have a better position into the next round,” said Garcia.
