COLEGIO de San Lorenzo and Centro Escolar University hope to solidify their 1-2 positions when they go up against separate rivals on Thursday in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) Season 2 at the Olivarez College gym in Sucat, Parañaque City.
The CDSL Griffins collide with the Technological Institute of the Philippines Engineers (1-2) at 12 noon with the former determined to notch their fifth straight win and gain more confidence in time for their showdown with the CEU Scorpions on Monday.
The Scorpions, on the other hand, will be shooting for their fourth straight win in their 2 p.m. clash with the Bulacan State University Gold Gears at 2 p.m.
Reinforced by Benin native Soulemane Chabi Yo and local aces Jon Gabriel, Jan Formento and John Rojas, the Griffins are second best defensive team, holding their first four rivals to just 64.5 points.
But they are more impressive offensively, averaging by a league-best 88.25 points.
The Scorpions are the No. 1 squad defensively so far after allowing their three previous rivals to just 54.3 points.
Despite their early success, CdSL coach Boni Garcia sees a tough contest with the Engineers.
“I’m expecting a tough game against TIP. They’re also one of the taller teams. That’s why we cannot afford to relax. We’ll just stick to what has been doing wonders for us and that’s our team defense,” said Garcia.
“We’re starting to get comfortable excuting our plays offensively. The guys have been patient so far whatever kind of defense they’ve been throwing at us,” added Garcia.
The Gold Gears are aching to bounce back from an 84-90 setback dealt by TIP last week.
