HUBERT Cani nailed a crucial three-pointer as National University-A downed Sacred Heart of Cebu, 80-76, on Thursday on opening day of the Seaoil-NBTC National Finals Division I at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Cani converted a three-pointer with 1:09 left in the fourth to put the UAAP champion ahead, 76-72, and overcome a gallant stand by the Magis Eagles in Group B.
Mark Dyke added 16 points as the Seaoil Extreme Diesel-NU Bullpups got off to a fine start in the event which is part of the grassroots program of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
Arnie Padilla, son of former PBA and Philippine Basketball League cager Onie Padilla, pumped in 17 points for the Magis Eagles.
In other Division I games, Hua Siong College of Iloilo had a torrid fourth quarter to beat West Negros University of Bacolod, 74-61.
Iloilo outscored Bacolod, 26-4, in the final period for the rousing victory in Group C.
Tyke Igor Bano finished with 17points, while John Paul Calvo added 16 markers for Hua Siong.
In Division II at the CCF gym, University of Assumption-Pampanga defeated Olongapo City High School, 108-84, in the event also backed by the MVP Sports Foundation, Meralco, Smart, NLEX, Maynilad, Philex, Philippine Star and Molten.
