EMMANUEL Calo is eager to work hard and sustain his fine performance with Davao Occidental in the MPBL after making his presence felt in a huge win over Quezon City.
With ex-pro Bonbon Custodio out due to a back injury, Calo took advantage of the extra minutes and wound up with 21 points in 21 minutes of action as the Tigers defeated the Capitals.
The former University of the Visayas guard shone in a game-deciding 17-3 Tigers run in the third that broke the backs of the Capitals.
Largely unknown after playing for the Green Lancers as he spent time barnstorming one “ligang labas” after another, Calo also had six rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Tigers.
Calo said he feels right at home with Davao Occidental, which is giving all players equal opportunities.
“It’s nice here because even though we have a lot of ex-pros, there isn’t anyone here who acts like he’s the star. We’re all treated the same here by Coach Don Dulay,” said Calo.
Calo is also making the most out of playing under Dulay, a former guard for Rain or Shine in the PBA.
He says playing in the MPBL just might the push he needs to make it to the next level.
“It’s a dream come to true to play for a league like this. I consider it a huge stepping stone for my career. Of course, playing in the PBA is one of my goals but right now, I’m focusing on how to help Davao win games,” Calo said.
