BOBBY Ray Parks kept National University’s win run alive, hitting the game-winner for a 70-68 overtime win against Adamson to help the Bulldogs go 6-0 in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup on Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
Parks’ pull-up jumper with 3.2 seconds left completed the Bulldogs’ comeback from six points down in the final two minutes of the game.
The 6-foot-4 swingman atoned for his missed lay-up in the final seconds of regulation with the go-ahead jumper over Jansen Rios. Jericho Cruz’s desperation triple came up short.
NU won despite giving up a 14-point second quarter lead, with Adamson taking the upperhand 68-64 at the 1:53 mark on a Cruz deuce. But the Falcons went scoreless from there.
“It was a tough game and an acid test especially playing against a UAAP team,” said NU coach Eric Altamirano. “You can’t take Adamson for granted. We didn’t do a good job with our execution, we committed 24 turnovers, and a lot of lapses on defense.”
NU posted a 28-14 lead in the second quarter but Adamson slowly mounted a comeback.
“Getting a big lead in the first half, it gave them a mindset that it was an easy game,” said Altamirano.
Trailing 59-62, Adamson tied the match on Cruz’s split free throws before Lloyd Abrigo converted two shots from the stripe with 19.4 seconds left in the fourth.
In the ensuing possession, NU missed two good looks with Parks missing a lay-up and Alfred Aroga failing to hit the putback.
Aroga finished with 20 points, 16 rebounds, and five blocks for the Bulldogs.
