NATIONAL University and Rizal Technological University won their first assignments in the Philippine National Games baseball competitions on Friday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
The Bulldogs allowed just a hit to beat Titans Baseball Club, 6-0, while the Blue Thunders defeated Pacific Online-Illam, 10-3, to arrange a second-round encounter in this double-elimination, 14-team tournament.
Ronnel Peralta, Alpha Turaray, Clarrence Caasalan, Rick Celivoso, and Aries Oruga took turns on the mound for NU, with Turaray allowing only a single off JP Longanilla in the third inning.
RTU exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning after the Illam seniors squad, which is using the PNG as tune-up for its Aspac qualifier for the Little League World Series, tied the contest at 3-3.
Also seeing action in the tournament are the national team-backed Philab, RP Youth, Philippine Air Force, UAAP squads De La Salle, Ateneo, University of Santo Tomas, and Adamson, and De La Salle-Canlubang, Angeles University Foundation, and Marikina.
Meanwhile, the softball competitions begin on May 26 in Marikina with 13 teams participating in the men’s and women’s division.
The Manila big league softball team will play in the PNG as part of its buildup for the Aspac regionals slated in Clark next month.
Ateneo, University of the Philippines, RTU, Tacurong City, Polytechnic University of the Philippines Alumni, and De La Salle-Zobel are also competing.
The men’s teams are Philippine Air Force, Philippine Navy, Laguna, Pasig, MS-Marikina, and RTU.
