THE Bulacan Kuyas have beefed up their core in the midst of a coaching change as they look to atone for their disappointing playoff performance in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL)'s debut season.
Bulacan has hired a new coach in Britt Reroma and has kept its core group in Jay-R Taganas, James Martinez, Tep Siruma, Jorey Napoles, Jerome Villanueva, and Wowie Escosio for the Anta Datu Cup.
Reroma said the team also added Jerick Canada, Hans Thiele, Gboy Babilonia, and Jason Melano in a bid to keep up with expansion teams which have also beefed up their respective lineups.
“Dinagdagan lang namin para makapag-compete sa mga stronger teams. Maraming expansion teams like San Juan and Mandaluyong na malakas talaga,” said Reroma, a former coach of the San Beda Red Cubs.
The Kuyas finished second in the elimination round during the league's maiden conference with a 6-3 card, but were stunned by seventh-seed Paranaque in the quarterfinals.
Reroma said the goal is to improve on its quarterfinal finish, but that is easier said than done.
“Everyday, we just want to be better. We want to develop ‘yung chemistry namin. Our goal is to be better everyday. Of course, gusto namin ma-improve namin ‘yung last conference. Quarterfinals kami so we are looking forward to the semifinals.
“But because nag-iba na ng format, maraming teams, kailangang mag-trabaho ng husto sa ensayo. We must be prepared. Ang importante is ‘yung mental approach,” said Reroma.
Reroma said he looks forward to coaching in the MPBL, after he declined an offer to play in the now-defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) decades ago.
“Masarap ‘yung feeling. Looking back 20 years ago, I almost played in the MBA. Na-achieve ko ‘yung goal ko na imbes na maglaro sa MBA, ngayon head coach ako ng Bulacan Kuyas.
"Magandang opportunity ‘yung binigay ni Congressman (Jose Antonio) Sy-Alvarado. It’s a great feeling. It’s an honor na makapag-coach sa MPBL most especially sa Bulacan Kuyas,” said Reroma.
