BRIGHT Akhuetie’s double-double propelled University of the Philippines to a 66-61 win over University of the East for its fifth straight win in the 2018 Chooks-to-Go Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup Thursday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Nigerian big man bullied his way to 17 points and 16 rebounds to help the Fighting Maroons improve to 5-3.
Jun Manzo also contributed 13 points, three rebounds and two assists.
“I posted a challenge to the not-so-usual guys who got to play in this game,” said UP coach Bo Perasol. “The challenge is for them is how are we going to play without our usual scorers.”
Janjan Jaboneta stepped up, dropping eight points, none bigger than his bail-out triple from the left wing in the final minute to give UP a 63-61 lead.
Jaboneta and Manzo sealed the with foul shots in the waning seconds.
Team captain Paul Desiderio and Javi Gomez de Liaño missed the game for the Fighting Maroons due to academic commitments, while Juan Gomez de Liaño missed his second game after suffering an ankle sprain.
Rey Acuno topped the Red Warriors with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Alvin Pasaol and Chris Conner both had 13.
UE dropped to a 2-4 slate in the summer tourney.
