FORMER PBA player Boyet Bautista hit a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left and the Armed Forces of the Philippines Cavaliers outlasted the Philippine National Police Responders, 93-90, on Monday to regain the UNTV Cup championship at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The 5-foot-7 Bautista scored five of the team’s last six points, including the game-changing trey that shattered an 87-all count.
PNP’s Ollan Omiping launched a 3-point shot that was partially deflected.
Bautista hit two charities that made it, 92-87, with 18 ticks left. The former Letran star, who turned the ball twice including an eight-second violation, finished with 30 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals to emerge as the Finals MVP.
The title win was the second for the Cavaliers since beating the same squad two years ago, putting them on level with the Judiciary Magis for the number of titles.
The Magis took the inaugural championship – also at the expense of PNP – before beating the Malacanang Patriots last year.
UNTV president and CEO Daniel Razon and UNTV vice president Gerry Panghulan awarded the P4 million prize to the Cavaliers — P3.5 million going to their chosen charity in the AFP and P500,000 to be shared by team members.
The Responders got P2 million, with P1.7 million going to their chosen charity.
