JOSE Rizal University escaped with a 104-99 double-overtime victory over University of the East to grab the last spot in the Sweet 16 of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League on Thursday at the Arena in San Juan.

Jordan dela Paz made back-to-back baskets followed by a Ronnel Carampil jumper with less than a minute remaining to seal the win for the Heavy Bombers, who will face the Adamson Falcons on Saturday in Tanauan, Batangas.

UE entered the game tied with St. Clare and JRU at 1-1 and needed to win by five to advance to the next round.

Down by seven, 57-64, Roi Sumang carried the Red Warriors with 11 points late in regulation to force the first overtime.

John Villarias scored seven straight points to give JRU a 88-85 lead halfway in the extension period but missed a potential game-winner with less than three seconds left in the clock.

Villarias came through with 35 points for the Heavy Bombers, while John Lopez, dela Paz and Carampil chipped in 15, 13 and 12, respectively.

Sumang finished with 36 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists, while Bong Gallanza, Chris Javier and Adrian Santos had a combined 40 points for the Red Warriors.
