ATENEO leaned on a strong run late in the fourth quarter to turn back San Sebastian, 75-70, and clinch a second straight win in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Chris Newsome, Kiefer Raven and Earl Murphy took charge half way in the pivotal fourth as they came up with a combined 13 points sandwiching a split free throw from Jaymark Perez to stay in front for good, 70-62, in the final two minutes of play.
“It’s something that we should get used to ,” said Ateneo coach Bo Perasol of his team’s second straight close win that moved the Blue Eagles on top of Group B.
“It’s always going to be a struggle with our bigs. It’s not easier for us on rebounding and that’s our concern, that is why everybody has to step up. Nobody will bail us out but us,” added Perasol, noting the rebounding discrepancy which the Stags won, 53-43.
The Stags, who sat on a 57-53 lead entering the final quarter, threatened for the last time at 68-70 on six unanswered points. But the Blue Eagles hang on in the end to frustrate the NCAA powerhouse in its debut game.
Ravena came up with 19 points, while Newsome contributed 16 in another solid game for Ateneo.
Jon Rebollos paced the Stags with 17 points, while Perez and Jovit dela Cruz each had 13 apiece.
