College of Saint Benilde clinched a quarterfinal slot in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Preseason Cup after defeating Jose Rizal University, 67-63, on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Blazers finished with a 4-4 record to beat out Adamson for the last quarterfinal spot in Group B and will face Group A top seed San Beda College on June 6.
Adamson can still match CSB's win-loss record with a win over Arellano in Wednesday’s later match, but the Blazers will still take the quarterfinal slot due to the winner-over-the-other rule.
"We really didn’t expect them to make it to the quarters,” said CSB coach Richard Del Rosario. “It’s not really a goal that we set, we were just trying to improve and whatever happens in the games is a bonus.
"May nakita na kaming improvements and right now, we are given a gift na makapasok sa playoffs.”
CSB outscored JRU, 23-15, in the second quarter before surviving a late rally by the Heavy Bombers to seal the win.
The Blazers took a 63-51 lead on a Carlo Lastimosa lay-up at the five-minute mark but were limited to a lone field goal the rest of the way. The Heavy Bombers were able to cut the deficit to three points, 66-63, but Lastimosa and Joel Tolentino hit crucial free throws in the end.
Lastimosa had 13 points while Jonathan Grey added 12 for the Blazers.
Michael Mabulac had 15 points and John Lopez finished with 12 for the Heavy Bombers, who finished the preseason tournament with a 3-5 record.
