YOUNG cagers will battle it out for honors in the inaugural Beato Antonio Varona Invitational Basketball League starting on Sunday at the Letran Gym in Intramuros.
Formerly called the Dominican Invitational Basketball League, the competition will feature talents from different schools divided into two categories.
In the 12-Under Division, host Colegio de San Juan de Letran will be joined by the league’s original members Chiang Kai Shek, St. Stephen High School, Colegio de San Agustin A and B, and Philadelphia High School.
This year will also include new teams in Ateneo de Manila University, University of Santo Tomas, San Sebastian College, and Adamson University, who will be joining Letran, Chiang Kai Shek, and Philadelphia High School in the 15-Under Division.
All games will be played at the Letran Gym.
Headed by commissioner Elmer Latonio, a former Letran Squires coach, the league honors Beato Antonio Varona of the Order of Preachers, the Athletics Moderator of Letran from 1926 to 1933. The priest was martyred during the Spanish Civil War.
“[We want to] spread the good news through sports,” athletic moderator Fr. Victor Calvo, O.P. said. The tournament also seeks to aid in the development of young aspiring basketball players and discover new talents.
The opening ceremonies start at 8 a.m. For inquiries call 09334284774 or 09154499163.
