    Growing number of sports personalities set to throw hat into political ring

    A GROWING number of sports personalities have thrown their hats into the political ring.

    Boxing hero Manny Pacquiao, currently a congressman representing Sarangani province, is the most prominent on the list as he will be vying for a Senate seat in the May elections.

    Also gunning for a seat in the Senate is Joel Villanueva, currently the head of Tesda who had a stint with the University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP.

    On the other hand, multi-titled coach Yeng Guiao is set to vie for a second term as congressman in the first district of Pampanga where Dennis Pineda, manager of PBA stars like Calvin Abueva, Ian Sangalang and Arwind Santos, is a cinch to retain his post as vice governor.

    San Juan vice mayor Francis Zamora has filed his candidacy for mayor of the city. Zamora was a former player of the De La Salle Green Archers in the late 1990s and had stints in the defunct Philippine Basketball League (PBL).

    Incidentally, part of Zamora’s ticket is former PBA cager Paul Artadi, who will run for San Juan councilor.

    Meantime, a former member of San Juan’s Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) team, will also be running for an elected position in Laguna.

    Former PBA player Gherome Ejercito, who also played for the San Juan Knights in the defunct regional league, will be run ning for a board seat in the first district of Laguna, joining the ticket of cousin ER Ejercito, who will run as governor of the province.

    More sports personalities are expected to file for candidacy at the local government level in the next few days.

    Among them are Star head coach and incumbent Paranaque City councilor Jason Webb, former coach Binky Pavis (Paranaque), former PBA star and current Jose Rizal University coach Vergel Meneses (Bulacan) and Ato Agustin (Pampanga).
