MPBL to Basilan: Test negative for COVID or lose Game 3 by default

    Mar 12, 2021

BASILAN will have to yield a negative result in its next swab test in order to play the knockout match in the MPBL Lakan Season South Division finals.

This was the condition set by the MPBL after the Steel were forced to go on a seven-day quarantine after two players tested positive for COVID-19 inside the league's bubble in Subic.

MPBL commissioner Kenneth Duremdes said that the South finals between the Steel and the Tigers will be held on March 17 once the entire Steel team receives a negative result. The national finals will then be played the following day.

Duremdes, however, said that if Basilan will have another positive result, the Steel will lose by default and the Tigers will face San Juan in the finals on March 17.

“If may mag-positive ulit sa Basilan team, ang national finals, diretso na ng March 17. Win by default na si Davao kasi ibig sabihin nun, close contact kasi sila (Basilan) so baka nag-manifest na sa ibang players," Duremdes said.

The league confirmed that a second player from Basilan tested positive, with the entire team now in isolation inside the bubble.

As it is, the MPBL playoffs has already been delayed due to the health situation of Basilan. The knockout match in the South Division was supposed to be played last Wednesday.

Duremdes said the two players who tested positive will no longer play in the knockout match.

“Ang irere-swab na lang ay ‘yung mga negative. Yung dalawang nag-positive out na talaga ‘yun,” said Duremdes, according to a pool report.

The winner of the knockout match will face San Juan in the best-of-five finals.
