Malolos — The Mindoro Tamaraws and the Caloocan Supremos barged into the win column of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan (MPBL) Season on Tuesday night at the Bulacan Capitol Gym.
Showing better cohesion in only their second game in the league, the Tamaraws nipped the Paranaque Patriots, 63-61, while the Supremos rode the offensive explosion of Almond Vosotros to down Zamboanga Family's Brand Sardines, 83-74.
Living up to his role as take-charge guy, former pro Mac Baracael tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, complementing the 16-point effort of Sandy Cenal and the 10-point output of Rodel Vaygan, as Mindoro rebounded from its 87-83 defeat to fellow newcomer Bacolod Master's Sardines on June 25.
Paranaque, which suffered its second straight defeat after a successful start, drew 13 points each from veteran Jemal Vizcarra and Rommel Mangalino and 10 from Keith Pido.
Finding his range, Vosotros posted 31 points on a 50 percent shooting from the floor, including 3-of-6 conversion from three-point zone, and a 14-of-15 performance from the charity stripe.
John Carlos Escalambre added 12 points while Paul Sanga chipped in 10 as the Supremos, being supported by Victory Liner, snapped a three-game slide.
In the nightcap, Gwyne Capacio and Roldan Sara powered the Bulacan Kuyas past the Basilan Steel, 65-55.
The 6-foot-2 Capacio, a former Ateneo Blue Eagle and son of former PBA player Glenn, poured in 12 of his 21 points while Sara made 8 of his 17 in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Steel by themselves, 20-14, to raise the Kuyas' record to 3-1.
With only Junjie Hallare scoring in twin digits (11), the Steel tasted their first defeat in three games.
The MPBL goes to the Pasig Sports Complex on Wednesday with Cebu and Binan tangling at 4 p.m. Also on tap are Bicol-Marikina at 6:30 p.m. and Pasig-Bacoor at 8:30 p.m.
