GAB Banal was named the MVP for the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Datu Cup after his solid performance for the Bacoor City Strikers.
Banal was the league's third-best scorer with 18.2 points on 38-percent shooting, to go with 8.9 rebounds, and 6.4 assists as he steered Bacoor to a fifth-place finish in the South Division with its 13-12 win-loss card.
Unfortunately, the Strikers could only go as far as the Division semifinals, bowing to Davao Occidental in two games.
Banal, who failed to attend the awarding ceremony, led the All-MPBL First Team, where he was joined by Mark Yee of the Davao Occidental Tigers, Allan Mangahas of Muntinlupa Cagers, and the Manila Stars tandem of Aris Dionisio and Chris Bitoon.
John Wilson of the San Juan Knights, Leo Najorda of Davao Occidental Tigers, Michael Mabulac of Laguna Krah Heroes, Harold Arboleda of Zamboanga, and Jai Reyes of Navotas Clutch made up the All-MPBL Second Team.
Dionisio was named the Defensive Player of the Year, Bulacan Kuyas' JayR Taganas was awarded with the Sportsmanship Award, while Mayor Oca Malapitan of the Caloocan Supremos was given the Executive of the Year award.
