ATENEO de Iloilo and the University of the Visayas scored contrasting wins as they bagged the SBP and Passerelle division championships, respectively, in the Visayas Regional Finals of the 2014 BEST SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament 2014 in Roxas City.
Ateneo de Iloilo came from behind to nip University of San Carlos of Cebu, 44-42, to win the SBP division title, while UV trounced Hua Siong College of Iloilo, 57-35, for the Passerelle division championship.
Ian Espinosa and Gem Gregorio led Ateneo’s fightback from a double-digit deficit, sparking a 10-0 run tie the game at 38 with 2:51 left. USC took control early with a 21-11 first quarter.
Meanwhile, in the Passerelle final, UV took the upperhand right in the first quarter and never looked back.
The Cebu squad grabbed a 14-9 lead at the end of the first period, and Denzel Sabroso scored all of his 12 points in a 12-2 run that gave UV a 29-11 lead at halftime.
UV and Ateneo de Iloilo will represent Visayas in the national finals set December 13 and 14 at the Magis Eagles Arena of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu.
St. John’s Institute defeated Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion of Roxas City, 47-22, in the battled for SBP division third place.
University of St. La Salle of Bacolod trounced Purisima, 73-32, in the third place match of the Passerelle division.
