CEBU CITY — The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles captured the title in the 18-under division after crushing Roxas from Zamboanga del Norte, 64-44, in the finals of the 2017 Dreamers Regional Basketball Challenge on Saturday at the Ateneo de Cebu court.
The Magis Eagles leaned on a strong second half performance to get past the shifty Roxas squad, which tied the game at 29 midway through the third period.
The veteran-laden Magis Eagles did not flinch and responded with a 12-2 run capped by consecutive three-pointers by Ramonito Lapina and new recruit Franz Diaz from De La Salle-Zobel to again pull away, 41-31.
Another 13-2 blast in the fourth pushed their lead to 19 points, 57-38, with under five minutes remaining, sealing the win and the crown for Ateneo de Cebu.
Wingman Patrick Yu led the Magis Eagles with 26 points. Big man Christian Manaytay was named tournament MVP.
John Pinero led Roxas with 21 points.
In the 16-under division, Tacloban Active Basketball Center, Inc. upset Ateneo de Cebu, 52-43.
Mark Guilhang guided the visitors with 17 points, including a huge three-pointer with less than a minute left that pushed their lead back to six.
In the 13-under class, the Philippine Youth squad coached by Mark Herrera claimed the title with a 69-46 win over Pinoy Youth Dreamers.
Fresh off a triumphant campaign in the DSA Asia Cup Invitational in Hong Kong last month, the Philippine team showed their mettle and got 14 points each from Kerwin Flores and Prince Alao in the tournament organized by Pinoy Youth Dreamers of Beaujing Acot and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and supported by Smart, 7-Eleven, PP Busline, Dymaxion Builders, Leyte Biliran Star Bus Corporation, Regent, Starbread, Breadstory, JAMAN, Rain or Shine, H+Autoworx, Xpress Printing, Jonie’s Sizzlers & Roast, Dunkin’ Donuts, Chairman Joselito Dela Merced and Josie Macapagal of Barangay San Antonio, Pasig City and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.
