ATENEO continued to roll in the Filoil Flying V Premier Cup, slaughtering hapless University of Perpetual Help via wire-to-wire 83-59 win on Friday in San Juan.
Fresh off their annual team building session in Baler, the Blue Eagles were relentless on both ends, waxing hot from beyond the arc while suffocating the Altas on the defensive end.
A huge second quarter powered by Mike Nieto took the fight out of the Altas for good as the Blue Eagles rolled to their sixth win in as many tries.
“We’re working primarily on the stuff that we’ve been practicing. We just want to see the fruits of it today,” said Ateneo assistant Sandy Arespacochaga.
“We are also looking at whether we can sustain the defense we have been doing the past few games. Small things. We’re very happy that the team made the decisions themselves,” he added.
‘Big Mike’ wound up with 18 points, making six of his 10 attempts in just 15 minutes off the bench. Angelo Kouame added 17 points and 11 rebounds as Matt Nieto and Thirdy Ravena contributed 12 and 10, respectively.
The Blue Eagles also held Perpetual to 36-percent shooting from the field while forcing 18 turnovers.
Transferee Kim Aurin had 18 points and six rebounds but couldn't save Perpetual from dropping to 0-5 for the tournament.
