ATENEO erased an eight-point deficit in the last three minutes to stun Lyceum, 57-52, on Saturday and capture the 25-under division crown of the Milcu Got Skills Elite Showcase at the Lyceum gym.
Gian Mamuyac had 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals on his way to winning the Most Valuable Player honors of the tournament but it was Miguel Fortuna and Gabby Reyes who provided the spark for the Blue Eagles as they spearheaded a 14-2 finish.
“Sinabi ko lang sa mga boys kahit during the tournament na we have to play with heart. Huwag lang kaming sumuko. ‘Yun ‘yung theme namin, never give up and play the Ateneo style of basketball,” said Ateneo coach Yuri Escueta.
Fortuna scored on a three-point play and a lay-up to cut Lyceum’s lead down to one point, 51-50, before Tyler Tio hit two free throws to give Ateneo the lead with 1:04 left in the fourth.
After a Lyceum turnover on the inbound, Reyes hit a jumper with 32 seconds to play to give Ateneo a 54-51 lead.
CJ Perez split his two free throws for Lyceum to trim the gap to two points but Pirates came up empty on their next possession. Reyes knocked down two charities to give Ateneo a 56-52 lead.
Brix Ramos also had 10 points, while Reyes and BJ Andrade had nine points each for the Blue Eagles Team B, which has 12 freshmen.
Perez topscored had 12 points for Lyceum, which failed to stay ahead after a 12-2 start to the fourth period of the finale of the tournament sponsored by Milcu, sanctioned by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and backed by Basketball TV, Gerry's Grill, Gatorade, Clyde Shoe Cleaner, Kawasaki, LGR, SLAM, Rain or Shine, Honda, Coach Athletic Trainers Tape, Secret Fresh, Mighty Sports, Nousha Kebabs and Barbeque, FMR Bus Services, and Patricio’s Online Sneaker Source.
