JIO Jalalon had 21 points, 10 assists, and five steals as Arellano dethroned last year’s champion San Beda, 86-79, on Tuesday in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup.
The Chiefs continue to live up to the billing as title favorites in their mother league, downing the perennial championship contender Red Lions with only weeks to go before NCAA Season 92 opens.
Arellano advanced to the semifinals of the preseason tournament for the first time, setting up a shwodown with National University on Friday.
In contrast, San Beda failed to clinch a semifinal berth in the preseason tilt for the first time in the league’s 10-year existence.
Dioncee Holts had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Chiefs, who also got 16 points from Zach Nichollsand, who went 4-of-11 from the 3-point line.
“We were trailing. Naghahabol kami. Hindi naman kami nag-dominate dahil battle of spurts,” said Arellano coach Jerry Codinera as he played down the win.
Donald Tankoua had 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Red Lions.
