ARELLANO banked on a blistering start to overpower Jose Rizal University, 83-67, on Saturday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
The Chiefs limited the Bombers to five measly points in the first quarter, where they established a 20-point cushion to eventually score the blowout victory, their sixth in eight games.
Already assured of a quarterfinal berth in Group A after Far Eastern University lost to College of St. Benilde on Friday, the Chiefs, led by skipper James Forrester and John Pinto, nevertheless brought their A-game against a perennial Final Four contender in the NCAA.
“They’re like a pitbull, pag kumagat , hindi sila nag-gi-give in,” Chiefs coach Koy Banal said of JRU. “Good thing we were able to start strong. The players’ desire allowed us to get the W.”
The Chiefs, who are coming off a stunning 77-76 win over the NCAA’s defending champion, San Beda last Wednesday, are now undefeated in four games against their NCAA rivals in the preseason tournament.
“Gusto namin mag-dominate sa NCAA teams,” Banal said. “NCAA will be a different story, but it’s still a morale-booster.”
The Bombers suffered their fifth loss in six games.
