MALOLOS Mighty Sports bagged its second Republika Cup basketball title with an 86-84 win over Malolos Republica.
Former PBA MVP Kenneth Duremdes combined with former PBA player Niño Marquez for six points in the dying seconds to lift Mighty Sports.
Marlou Aquino, also a former PBA star and now assistant to coach Duremdes at Adamson in the UAAP, came up with 20 points for Mighty Sports.
Mighty Sports led by as many as 15 points in the middle of the third quarter but back-to-back treys by Republics hotshots Allan Mangahas and Jonathan Fernandez cut the lead to seven going into the final period.
The Republics carried the momentum into the fourth quarter and erected a five-point lead on a 16-4 run in the final minutes of the game only to fall short as Mighty Sports made its final push.
The tournament is part of the annual Festival of History, Culture, Arts and Heritage celebration of the City of Malolos, also known as the “Fiesta Republic.”
