SAN Beda overcame a sluggish start and ran away with a 96-79 win over Lyceum in a huge Filoil Flying V Premier Cup debut on Wednesday in San Juan.
The Red Lions struggled early but picked up the pace in the second half to send their foes to their second straight defeat.
"The players are very excited because this was our first game. We started bad. We had some turnovers early, we missed easy shots but in the second quarter, I told them that they just had to relax," said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez who tipped his hat to Topex Robinson for forming a formidable Pirates squad.
"Credit to Topex, its different team. I'm always talking to the boys and telling them that if we want to beat LPU, we had to match their intensity and aggressiveness. We discussed everything and we just stuck to the gameplan," he added.
Robert Bolick starred in the blistering third quarter where the Lions started to create separation from the Pirates.
The 2016 NCAA Finals Most Valuable Player paced the Pirates with 16 points while marksman AC Soberano had 13.
JV Mocon and Arnaud Noah lorded over the paint with 12 points apiece to backstop their backcourt's effort.
CJ Perez led the Pirates with 15 points but that didn’t stop their slide as they fell to 4-2 for the tournament.
