SAN Miguel legend Allan Caidic is looking at the bright side even after the Beermen lost a heartbreaker against Alaska in the championship game of the UNTV Cup PBA Legends Faceoff.
The Beermen lost, 77-75, to the Milkmen on Monday night in the title game of the benefit legends tournament after Johnny Abarrientos hit a game-winning lay-up with 12.2 seconds left.
Even though it was a championship of a benefit tournament for less fortunate former PBA players, Caidic said he was also saddened the Beermen were not able to capture the title after sweeping the elimination round.
“Nandoon naman kami,” said the 56-year-old Caidic. “We tried our best. Nakita mo naman ‘yung game. Walking wounded kami eh. But at least, sabi ko naman, umpisa pa lang sa liga, more than the result, it’s the camaraderie at ‘yung na-contribute namin sa foundation. ‘Yun ang importante.”
“Bragging rights lang talaga ‘yung outcome. Masakit din kasi sayang, we had a chance. Na-sweep namin eliminations at semifinals tapos five guys (sa finals), hindi nakalaro,” said Caidic, who played for the Beermen from 1993 to 1998.
Caidic, however, said they have no regrets about the way we played as only seven players suited up for the championship game with Chris Calaguio, Kiko Adriano, and Caidic leading the Beermen attack.
“Ang instinct namin is we have to score,” said Caidic, who tied the game at 75 on a three-pointer. “We have to do something kasi ang [strength] talaga ng Alaska is ‘yung transition. Once na mag-turnover, mag-miss kami, ang hirap ma-stop ni Johnny at si Willie (Miller).”
It was Miller who hit a triple to make it a 75-72 game before Caidic responded with a three of his own. After Abarrientos’ lay-up, Olsen Racela missed an open triple in San Miguel’s final possession of the match.
“The three-point shot of Miller, ‘yun ang dagger sa amin saka breaks of the game. May two crucial possessions na hindi natawag. Pero that’s part of the game. At least, nagkaroon pa kami ng chance to win it.”
On the last play, Caidic said: “’Yung play namin, dalawa ‘yung nakuha ko sa corner kaya na-libre si Olsen. He has to take that shot kasi sabi namin sa timeout, it’s either quick two or if you are open sa three, take the three. Eh open naman siya. Okay naman dahil natuwa ang mga fans.”
Despite the loss, Caidic is happy that the tournament was a success as proceeds of the event will go to the PBA Legends Foundation where Caidic is the treasurer.
“I’m so thankful kay Kuya Daniel (Razon), sa UNTV group for the never-ending support and guidance sa amin sa foundation. Nakita mo naman ‘yung support ng tao, family namin, at higit sa lahat, kay Kuya Daniel. I’m so thankful,” said Caidic.
