CEBU CITY – Alaska completed a sweep of the 2014 Charter Day Cup with a 96-86 win over the Mindanao-based commercial team Natumolan-Tagoloan Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Aces won all three games of the four-team single round-robin tournament.
Cebuano big man Sonny Thoss anchored Alaska’s offense down the stretch as he scored eight of his 17 points in the last five minutes of the game to beat the Tigers of head coach Van Halen Parmis, the winningest commercial basketball coach in this region.
The game was tied at 62-all heading to the last quarter when Thoss took over the scoring chores, scoring six in a 14-8 run that gave them the push needed to hack out the victory.
Last year’s Best Import Rob Dozier led the Aces in scoring with 20, while Calvin Abueva added 11.
The University of the Visayas Green Lancers’ 6-foot-11 import Jean Marie Mpouma paced the Tigers with 17 points while Ferdinand Lusdoc, Patrick Cabahug and Ian Saladaga had 11 points each.
In the second game, GlobalPort ended the tournament on a winning note, defeating Talk ’N Text, 85-79.
