THE Ateneo Blue Eagles and the Far Eastern University Tamaraws outplayed separate rivals on Saturday at the start of the 10th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament at the St. Placid gymnasium of San Beda in Mendiola, Manila.
Joma Adornado, son of PBA Hall of Famer William “Bogs” Adornado, fired a game-high 27 points to lead the Blue Eagles to an 86-76 win over a hardy Trinity University of Asia Stallions.
The Tamaraws leaned on two timely triples from Giovanni Cruz and Rod Dennison to lift them past the Angeles University Foundation Great Danes, 76-73, in this cagefest supported by Amazing Playground.
In the junior division, Mark Tamayo and Griller Garcia made 21 points apiece as they led the AUF Junior Danes to an 80-76 win over Trinity.
Adornado asserted himself at the start of the second half, touching off a 10-0 run with two triples.
As his father Bogs watched quietly from the gallery, Adornado’s treys allowed the Blue Eagles to overcome a 39-44 halftime deficit, and eventually turn the game around with a 49-44 lead.
Fil-Canadian John Lasa and JP Siarot then struck with a pair of layups, allowing the Loyola dribblers to take 60-53 spread.
Nicole Bolos led the Stallions with 27 points.
Adam Mohammed shot 15 points for the Tams while Dennison contributed 14.
Cruz and Dennison connected with their triples in the last 25 seconds, and as AUF enjoyed a 73-70 edge.
