Williams praised as SMB eyes sixth win in row

SAN MIGUEL goes for a share of first place on Saturday when it takes on the Jobstreet.com Singapore Slingers on Saturday in the Asean Basketball League at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The Beermen are looking to extend their five-game winning streak on the road against the Slingers in their 3 p.m. Manila time match-up.

San Miguel is gunning for its eighth win in 11 outings overall and tie idle Indonesia Warriors for the top spot in the standings.

Last weekend, the Beermen swept their ABL Hoops Fest campaign that included a 73-53 thumping of the Slingers in Ho Chi Minh City. San Miguel also won a lopsided contest against Saigon Heat, 80-55, in front of their home fans to extend its winning run to five.

The hot streak by the Beermen is largely credited to the play of defensive-minded import Justin Williams and their locals stepping up on both ends of the floor.

In only his second game as a Beermen, Williams has become an intimidating presence against other taems as he has swatted away a total of 13 shots.

“Justin's (arrival) is timely because he is very defensive-minded. In the paint, he will actually go for every shot,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria.

Chris Banchero, meanwhile, has continued to be the Beermen’s top option on offense when he scored 20 points in their previous outing against the Heat.

The Warriors, winners over Westports Malaysia Dragons, 84-67, in their previous match-up last week, will face the Chang Thailand Slammers on Wednesday.
