LEO Avenido and Justin Williams got the San Miguel Beermen to a big early lead en route to a 78-57 rout of the Jobstreet.com Singapore Slingers on Saturday to extend their winning streak to seven games in the Asean Basketball League at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Avenido, last season’s Most Valuable Player, scored a season-high 16 points, while Williams added 14 markers for San Miguel. The duo scored 12 points each in the first half that led to an easy victory for the Beermen, who improved their record to 10-3.
Chris Banchero led all scorers with 19 as the Beermen closed in on the Indonesia Warriors, who lead the way with an 11-3 slate.
“Nag-struggle kami nung first quarter maybe because we are a little bit rusty,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria. “Mabuti nalang nung second quarter, nag-pick-up maybe because of our advantage sa big men.”
Williams also had seven rebounds and three blocks, while fellow import Brian Williams added six points and nine rebounds.
The Beermen were up 20-15 by the end of the first quarter then pulled away with a 7-0 run highlighted by a JR Cawaling lob pass to Justin Williams for a slam, 29-18.
The Beermen led, 36-22, on a Banchero steal and basket with less than a minute to play in the first half.
San Miguel continued its mastery over Singapore, winning their four encounters this season. The Beermen will face the Slingers again next Saturday as they go for the season sweep at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
