Westports Dragons snap Alab Pilipinas' winning streak on Joshua Munzon heroics

THE Westports Malaysia Dragons snapped San Miguel Alab Pilipinas’ eight-game winning streak after pulling off a thrilling 90-89 victory on Sunday in the Asean Basketball League at the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

Joshua Munzon hit one of two free throws in the final eight seconds to break a tied-game and give the Dragons a one-point lead.

Dondon Hontiveros then missed a wide-open three at the right corner, allowing the Dragons to pull off the escape act.

Prior to Munzon’s heroics, Alab import Justine Brownlee uncharacteristically missed two free throws with 32 seconds left in the game and the score tied at 89.

The loss relegated Alab to an 11-5 record as the Philippine side slipped to fourth place in the standings after playing its first game following a two-week break.

The Dragons, who improved to a 5-10 record, were within striking distance of Alab when Munzon hit a huge triple as Malaysia grabbed the upperhand, 89-87.

Renaldo Balkman tied the count with 47 seconds left, but Alab missed the opportunity to retake the lead as Brownlee flubbed his free throws 16 seconds later.

Munzon then drive to the basket and was fouled, sending the Fil-American big guard to the line for the go-ahead free throw.

He finished the game with 19 points, six rebounds, three steals, and two blocks in an all-around effort for the Dragons.

Chris Eversley had 36 big points to lead Westports Dargons.

The loss spoiled the effort of Balkman, who had 33 points and 19 rebounds for Alab. Brownlee added 25 points for the Philippine side, which beat Formosa two weeks ago.
