SAN MIGUEL erupted with a furious first quarter wind-up and never looked back from there in a 66-55 win over Jobstreet.com Singapore Slingers Sunday in the Asean Basketball League at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Chris Banchero led the Beermen with 16 points along four rebounds, five assists, and four steals, while Asi Taulava added 10 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Beermen, who claimed their fourth win in seven outings to take solo second behind defending champion Indonesia Warriors (6-2).
The Beermen finished the opening period with a vicious 18-3 run to take an early 22-12 lead after the first 12 minutes of play.
JR Cawaling nailed a three-pointer to start the second period as the Beermen took control for good to clinch the win in their third straight game on the road.
Matt Rogers, a replacement for the injured Brian Williams, gave a good account of himself in his ABL debut by finishing with eight points, along with fellow import Gabe Freeman and Eric Menk.
The import ditched by San Mig Coffee in the PBA in lieu of Denzel Bowles, hit a three-pointer that gave the Beermen a 13-9 lead. Banchero and Taulava then took turns in scoring to give the Beermen their 10-point advantage.
Cawaling’s three-pointer then stretched the lead to 25-12 from which the Slingers never recovered.
Banchero also topscored in the first of a three-game road swing for the Beermen opposite the Chang Thailand Slammers, before bowing to the Westports Malaysia Dragons a few days after.
The Beermen return at home on March 2 and play the Dragons at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
