ASI Taulava played down his stellar play on Friday night, stressing that the priority for the San Miguel Beermen is to be in peak form for the playoffs in the Asean Basketball League (ABL).
The 40-year-old big man finished with 26 points as the Beermen walloped the Westports Malaysia Dragons, 80-62, to nail their 10th straight win. The former PBA MVP went on a scoring rampage after tallying eight in a 10-0 San Miguel run to start the third period.
Taulava has been in vintage form in the regional league lately. Recently, he was named the ABL Player of the Month (March) by fans after averaging 8.2 rebounds in three games.
But The Fil-Tongan said his focus is on the team and not on his individual performance.
“Right now, we are just getting ready for the playoffs,” Taulava said in a TV interview right after the game. “It doesn’t matter who we are playing right now. The bigger picture is June.”
The Beermen are alone on top of the team standings with a 13-3 (win-loss) slate with still six games remaining on their schedule, including a May 3 match-up with the defending champions Indonesia Warriors.
As far as Taulava is concerned, he wants the Beermen to finish the eliminations on a high note.
“We want to hit June on a good momentum and get ourselves in a situation with a nice swag going into the playoffs so we can put teams away,” said Taulava.
“No matter what our win-loss record is, when you get to June, it’s back to zero. We are just preparing ourselves and play San Miguel basketball,” he added.
