DANNY Seigle may have accepted the assistant coach job at Tanduay Alab Pilipinas, but that doesn't mean he has formally retired from basketball.

Seigle, 41, said he was lured into accepting an offer to become one of the assistant coaches of pal Jimmy Alapag at Alab Pilipinas by the opportunity for 'self-improvement.'

Seigle, however, insisted he is not yet retired from active play, saying he will make that announcement formally when the time comes.

"Not yet," Seigle said on Friday at the end of Alab's practice at the City Club Makati. "I'll make that announcement when it's time."

Seigle, who last played for TNT Katropa, said of the Alab coaching gig: "It's an opportunity that came by that I felt would help me as a person and I take it as that."

Alapag said Seigle is a big addition to the coaching staff that already has Mac Cuan, who was the head coach of Alab in the Philippine ballclub's maiden season in the regional league.

"Everybody knows Danny is arguably one of the best forwards in the PBA. Bringing his basketball mind, his basketball IQ, he is somebody who is not just a very close friend of mine but someone I respect.

"I respect his opinion. I respect what he sees on the court. I'm thankful that I have him and coach Mac onboard this season," Alapag said.

Seigle, a former PBA Rookie of the Year in 1999 and a many-time All-Star, also looks forward to working with Alapag, sees a lot of potential in Alab this season.

"We have a great bunch of guys that work hard everyday. They are really doing the effort they need to be successful. These guys are on the same page. They help each other out," Seigle said.
