BIÑAN City vice mayor Gel Alonte stole the show on Friday night in Alab Pilipinas’ match against the Singapore Slingers when he won in a halfcourt shooting contest during the halftime break.
Alonte converted the shot right on the first try, the ball hitting nothing but the net to the delight of his constituents. He won for himself an AirAsia ticket to a destination of his choice.
Alonte was actually not part of the contest as he was just egged on to join.
To people close to him, however, the shot didn't come as a surprise since Alonte regularly plays basketball and is in fact a former member of the Laguna team during high school in the Palarong Pambansa.
“Meron kaming thrice-a-week. Regular ako naglalaro except kung may appointments,” said Alonte.
“High school nag-Palarong Pambansa ako. Before ako nag-college, na-injured ako sa basketball. Until now, may bakal ako sa right knee,” he said.
Being a basketball player, it was easy for Alonte to go out there and attempt a halfcourt heave.
“Alam ko naman na marunong ako maglaro, kaya I tried,” said Alonte.
Alonte said he is glad that Alab Pilipinas chose Biñan to play their home games as he reiterated the city’s capability to host such events.
The city has already hosted local and even international competitions like the PBA, Philippine Superliga, and the Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship.
“Sobrang saya kasi napili ang venue namin. Malaking tulong sa siyudad na makilala ang City of Biñan at maipagmalaki namin ‘yung aming facilities. Sa mga susunod na panahon, sana magkaroon pa uli,” said Alonte, who added the Alonte Sports Arena will be hosting a PBA quarterfinals game this conference.
As for the plane ticket he won, Alonte said he plans to use it to support Alab Pilipinas.
“Kapag may laro ang Alab, susuporta ako,” said Alonte.
