STA. ROSA - Red-hot San Miguel Alab Pilipinas torched Hong Kong Eastern, 88-76, on Sunday night to stay unscathed at home in the 2019 Asean Basketball League (ABL) at Sta. Rosa Multipurpose Complex.
Hulking big man PJ Ramos got the three-point party going before Renaldo Balkman and Josh Urbiztondo followed suit in the third frame of an ill-tempered game that saw the two Alab imports clash with HK giant Sam Deguara.
Alab improved to 10-2 for the season to stay on top of the standings. The Philippine side has now won four games in a row while keeping its home record immaculate at 9-0.
The Alab duo conspired in a 17-2 blast that turned a close 45-43 affair into a 62-45 edge for the hosts. Ethan Alvano capped that run with a trey at the 4:25 mark of the third quarter.
That run formed part of Alab's sensational 28-point explosion in the third quarter for a commanding 73-55 advantage.
Balkman bucked his slow start and poured 16 of his 20 points in the second half, 12 from that third period, on top of 14 rebounds, seven assists, and a steal.
Ramos, meanwhile, made mincemeat of towering foe Sam Deguara on his way to 18 points on a 4-of-9 clip from threes, alongside 19 rebounds and six assists.
Urbiztondo was a bundle of energy inside as he shot 16 points built on four triples, as well as taking four steals, three boards, and three assists.
Lawrence Domingo and Caelan Tiongson both had 10 points apiece as they continued to step up in the absence of two-time ABL Local MVP Bobby Ray Parks, who sat out his second straight game due to a groin injury.
Collectively, Alab shot 13-of-33 from beyond the arc for a sky-high 39-percent clip.
Marcus Elliott paced Hong Kong Eastern (9-8) with 21 points, four rebounds, and two assists, as O'Darien Bassett got 14 points, seven dimes, and six boards in the defeat.
Deguara was held to just seven points, but still got 12 rebounds and five blocks.
Lee Ki missed the trip for Hong Kong Eastern due to personal reasons.
