TANDUAY Alab Pilipinas finally clinched its first victory in the 2017-2018 Asean Basketball League season, beating the Formosa Dreamers, 78-61, on Saturday at the Changhua County Stadium in Taiwan.
Reggie Okosa led Alab’s attack, while Josh Urbiztondo and Ray Parks spearheaded the quality contributions of the locals as the Philippine squad ended the year with a win after losing its first four games.
Alab won without import Ivan Johnson, who was coming off a 30-point game against Hong Kong Eastern on Wednesday.
It was also Jimmy Alapag’s first win as head coach as Alab Pilipinas goes into the holiday break in high spirits.
The team resumes its ABL campaign on January 3 against the Westports Malaysia Dragons.
In his role as the lone world import for Alab in the game, Okosa dominated the paint, finishing with 19 points, 19 rebounds, and two blocks, but got good support from the locals.
Urbiztondo had an all-around effort, contributing 12 points, six rebounds, and seven assists, while Parks got a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Also playing quality minutes in the absence of Johnson were Rico Maierhofer, who had seven points and four rebounds, and Dondon Hontiveros, who chalked up seven points, three rebounds, and four assists.
Okosa scored the first four points in Alab’s 8-0 run to pull away in the third period, 57-44. Hontiveros knocked down a triple before the quarter ended with Alab ahead, 62-48. Alab continued the attack in the fourth, spoiling Formosa’s home debut.
