SPITFIRE guard John Abad put on a flawless display of scoring firepower and towed Prime Asia-University of the Visayas to an 87-78 win over Lion Tiger-University of Southern Philippines Foundation in the 2013 Enervon-Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Partner’s Cup Thursday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The lefty Abad was on fire in the third quarter when he poured in all of his 20 points on a perfect 8-of-8 shooting from the field that finally broke the game wide open.
The Lancers were barely ahead at 38-37 when Abad suddenly went on a zone, exploding for 11 straight points in just a three-minute span off three triples and a mid-range jumper that suddenly had UV pulling away, 49-39.
Fittingly, Abad capped the Lancers’ offensive barrage with another three-pointer that beat the third quarter buzzer and give UV a 76-50 lead.
In all, the Lancers outscored the Panthers in the third quarter, 38-13.
League Rookie of the Year and MVP Wowie Escosio added 13, while Cameroonian Steve Akomo had 11 including a crowd-pleasing tomahawk slam in the final quarter.
USPF fell to 2-5 (win-loss) and was led by the 19 markers of Joseph Sedurifa.
In the first game, Cebu Landmasters-University of San Carlos got back at Gaisano Capital South-University of Cebu, 91-78, in a highly-physical encounter.
The Warriors evened their record at 3-3, while the Webmasters remained in second place at 4-2.
