THE sixth MVPSF Coaches Convention by the National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) opened its three-day event on Monday with a record turnout.
Around 1,500 basketball coaches attended the start of the seminar/workshop for basketball coaches around the country where the latest trends in the sport will be discussed.
Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes delivered the opening speech while Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin, National University assistant coach Paolo Layug, Alab Pilipinas coach Jimmy Alapag, Chappy Callanta, and Noli Ayo will also speak in the duration of the convention.
Also in the convention is Australian coach Brett Coxsedge, who has 20 years of professional experience in teaching multi-skilled players, training environment, and developing a defensive style of play.
The coaches' convention is the kick-off event of the annual SM NBTC League, a five-month tournament across all regions culminating in the national finals in March 2018.
"Ang aim nito is we want them to mentor our coaches," said SM NBTC director Eric Altamirano. "Sila rin ang aming avenue para ma-mentor 'yung mga players. Ang importante lang, maintindihan ng mga coaches lalo na sa NBTC program na it's not just about winning but developing skills, building character, and raising future leaders."
Reyes was glad to share his knowledge to fellow coaches during the convention, most of them coming from the provinces and mentoring elementary and high school players.
"I think the most important thing that the fact that they have to focus not only on Xs and Os, the technical part, but the leadership and the connection, the important value of connecting with players because that's what makes effective coaches," said Reyes.
