JAKARTA, Indonesia – The Fil-Chinese Veterans Basketball Association (FCVBA) sent two more teams to the semis as its 50 and 60-years-and-above teams scored impressive wins over separate rivals in the 22nd ASEAN Veterans Basketball Tournament Friday at the ASABA Basketball Club here.
With former Letran standout Jerry Gonzales, Kenneth Yap, Rudy Yu, and Ben Ong presiding over the team’s bristling first quarter onslaught, FCVBA completed a two-game sweep of the 50-years-and-above team division with a 45-35 victory over the host club in a wild and emotional game.
Still quick and deadly at 52, Gonzales knocked down three triples to lead the team with 11 points while Yap, who had a brief stint in the PBA, added 10 aside from gabbing 7 seven boards.
Yu, current team manager of University of Santo Tomas basketball squad, anchored the team’s rock-solid defense along with former University of the East star Julio Cruz and Robert Sy.
The 60s, on the other hand, bounced back from a heart-breaking 48-47 defeat to ASABA last Thursday with a 45-39 win over Kuala Lumpur to finish No. 2 in their group, enough to secure a semis berth for a fifth straight time in the annual regional tournament.
Conrad Siy and Achit Kaw starred for the team as they drilled in 10 points, while Rain or Shine co-team owner Terry Que, Jimi Lim, Zotico Tan, and Sunny Co also produced key baskets as FCVBA finished with a 2-1 record.
Bong Tan, Benny Cheng, Joseph Realista, Alain Andres, and Braulio Lim made it 3-for-3 for FCVBA as they carved out a 60-38 drubbing of the host club to likewise swept the 40-years-and-above division.
