KUCHING, Malaysia — The 60-year-old-and above team of the Filipino-Chinese Veterans Basketball Association (FCVBA) advanced to the semifinals of the 24th Asean Seniors Basketball Tournament on Thursday by completing a two-game sweep of its group elimination round assignments.
Once again drawing big numbers from Kenneth Yap and Zotico Tan, FCVBA dethroned Hatyai of Thailand, 47-40, in Group B action and will face a local team in the semis.
The 40-year-old squad also swept its group elims by drubbing Asaba of Indonesia, 66-49, for its third straight win, but the 50s side suffered a stinging 60-66 defeat to Kinsar of Malaysia.
Despite their defeat – their first in three games – the 50s still emerged No. 1 in their group.
Yap and Tan led the 60s with 13 points each while Julio Cruz, Jimi Lim, Bong dela Cruz, and Terry Que of Rain or Shine provided the support as the team advanced to the next round unbeaten.
Lim sealed the win for FCVBA with a jumper off a perfect assist by Que, 43-35, with barely three minutes left. Lim added four points.
“It’s a nice win but we need to play solid defensively in our next game,” said coach Eduard Tio.
