JAKARTA, Indonesia – The Fil-Chinese Veterans Basketball Association (FCVBA) sent two teams to the finals after contrasting wins in the 22nd ASEAN Veterans Basketball Tournament Saturday at the ASABA Basketball Club.
The 50s banked heavily on the late-game heroics of Danny Ching, Rudy Yu, and Ng Yuk Chi to pull off a thrilling 44-43 win over Meteor of the host country and forge a title showdown with the taller Hatyai squad of Thailand on Sunday.
Ex-Letran standout Jerry Gonzales led the team with 10 points, while Kenneth Yap, a former La Salle standout, chipped in nine markers.
With Bong Tan leading another sizzling start, the 40s went on to score a 48-37 win over Miri of Malaysia and arrange a title clash with the host club also Sunday, with the Fil-Chinese squad looking to extend its reign in the annual tournament to three straight years.
Tan fired 12 points while former Ginebra player Benny Cheng and Joseph Realista backed him up with 11 and 10, respectively.
The wins of the 40s and 50s cushioned the impact of the team’s 37-18 defeat to Kuching of Malaysia in the 60-years-and-above division.
