ROUTS marked the opening of the 10th Freego Cup on Tuesday as reigning NCAA champion Mapua (Malayan School) and National University whipped their respective rivals at the Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.
The Red Robins bucked a slow start to clobber the short-handed defending champion Chiang Kai Shek College Blue Dragons, 88-57, as Brian Lacap led the team’s well-balanced attack with 17 points.
The Blue Dragons, who represented National Capital Region in the recent Palarong Pambansa in San Jose, Antique, missed several key players who were given a much-needed rest after winning the gold medal in the annual sportsfest for high school and elementary athletes.
With six players scoring 8 points or more, the Bullpups got back at UAAP tormentor Far Easter University Baby Tamaraws, 76-54, in the annual cagefest also backed by Smart, Powerhouse and Home Depot.
Cyril Gonzales scored 13 points for NU which was swept by the Baby Tamaraws in their title series last February.
Also getting off to fine start was La Salle Greenhills which outlasted University of the East, 85-73, thanks to the 18-point show of JD Cagulangan.
Jose Rizal University also showed its readiness for the coming NCAA season with an 87-77 victory over Lyceum.
Meantime, University of Santo Tomas debuts on Saturday against the Baby Pirates.
