THE Philippines exacted revenge on Thailand with a 3-1 win on Sunday to clinch the East Asia Baseball Cup title at the Queen Sirikit Cup in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Filipinos finished the tournament with an unblemished 4-0 record and exorcised the ghost of the 2007 Southeast Asian Games when they were beaten by the Thais for the gold at the same playing venue.
The win earned the country the right to represent East Asia in the Asian Baseball Championships in Chinese-Taipei this November.
Before beating the Thais, the Filipinos scored victories over Singapore (16-0), Myanmar (13-0), and Hong Kong (3-1).
“Mission completed,” said Philippine Amateur Baseball Association president Hector Navasero, who led the team whose campaign was supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
“Nagbunga ang paghihirap naming lahat sa practice sa panalong ito. Hindi namin binigo ang sambayanan at ang suporta at tiwala ng PSC at kahit ng POC (Philippine Olympic Committee),” said head coach Wilfredo Hidalgo.
