LESMAR Ventura struck out 13 batters as University of Santo Tomas beat University of the Philippines, 5-4, on Thursday at the start of the UAAP Season 78 baseball competitions at the Rizal Memorial ballpark.
The lefty Ventura gave up just four hits in a splendid pitching performance, but the USt Golden Sox needed a big finishing kick to wipe out a 3-0 lead the Maroons built through three innings.
Ateneo started its bid for a fourth straight UAAP baseball crown with a 7-3 win over Adamson. Paolo Macasaet drilled a two-run hit to break a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning.
National University nipped De La Salle, 8-7, in the day's other game.
