Ateneo survives squeaker over UST to keep unblemished record in UAAP baseball

    Feb 11, 2016

DEFENDING champion Ateneo survived University of Santo Tomas, 5-4, on Thursday to stay undefeated after three games in the UAAP Season 78 baseball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Dio Remollo and Kai Furusawa belted run-scoring hits at the bottom of the fifth inning for Ateneo to atone for a three-run fifth for UST, before Ignacio Lozano issued four shutout innings in relief for the Blue Eagles.

The Katipunan-based school remained undefeated but had to earn the victory the hard way against UST, which led 4-3 midway in the fifth.

Left-handed pitcher Lesmar Ventura struck out eight batters in a starting role for the Tigers, but unraveled in the bottom half of the fifth as Remollo doubled with no outs to advance Marco Mallari home from first base, before scoring on a Furusawa single on the next at-bat.

Remollo bounced back from his blunders at the top of the fifth after a catching error with the bases loaded and a passed ball that allowed the go-ahead run to come in, 4-3.
