THE Philippines missed a spot in the finals of the Women’s Baseball World Cup following two losses on the final day of the group stage on Thursday in Tainan, Japan.
The Nationals were defeated by Chinese Taipei, 8-2, and Venezuela, 10-0, to finish the tournament with a 2-3 record, not enough to secure the top three places of the Tainan group stage and a berth in the finals to be played next year in the U.S. city of Rockford, Illinois.
Instead of the Filipinas, Venezuela, with the win, joined Japan and Chinese Taipei in the finals where they will also play against the U.S., Australia, and Canada, which clinched their berths by finishing the top three of the Rockford group stage last July.
Despite being ousted, the Philippines had a respectable showing in their World Cup debut, beating world No. 7 Cuba, 6-0, and Great Britain, 6-2, last Wednesday for their first set of victories.
In both games on Thursday, however, the Pinay batters conceded a binge of runs, forcing them to play catch-up.
Starter Jojielyn Lim gave up five runs and six hits in only one and two-thirds innings against Chinese Taipei.
It was the same story against Venezuela when starting pitcher Maria Christine Bautista conceded seven runs and seven hits.
